C-town Spirit has a unique approach to accomplishing its mission and it begins with our teaching process. Students learn about entrepreneurship by experiencing it firsthand. They operate a business, learning the policies and procedures that make their departments hum, and going through on-the-job training that simply cannot be captured in a textbook. Students are asked to not only apply the principles taught in the classroom but also to improvise, think ‘outside the box’ and make decisions based on real-time information where there may not be clear-cut solutions. This is the spirit of entrepreneurship and an experience that will benefit the students, whether they decide to become an entrepreneur or work for one.
Through our coaching structure, students are also taught about accountability. Students in upper-management positions must report to the Board of Directors. Students in middle-management positions must report to upper-management. Students accomplishing tactical tasks and objectives must report to their supervisors. The Board of Directors is made up of experienced business professionals, each with their own area of expertise, such as Sales or Marketing. Their expertise aligns with our organizational departments and the students can call upon the Directors for guidance at any given time. In addition, local volunteers from the business community act as C-town Spirit Coaches, visiting the class and meeting with the students on a regular basis to assist them in achieving their objectives.
The drafting of our organization chart begins when the students receive job descriptions for each position. Students then apply for the positions that appeal to them. Each student is interviewed and given a Spherical Dynamics Assessment to assist C-town Spirit in determining the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Students are selected for the position that fits them best, and then the real work (and fun) begins!
Like any non-profit organization, C-town Spirit’s ability to accomplish its mission relies heavily on the generosity of others who give with their time as well as financial contributions. The financial contributions can come in the form of a tax-deductible donation or through the purchase of promotional products.
