C-town Spirit is a unique venture, operated by and for
students. We are students at Charlestown
High School, who have a strong
sense of enthusiasm and pride for our school and community, and are now
operating our own class business. With oversight and coaching from business
leaders in the community, we have become a registered non-profit whose
mission is to improve school spirit, educational opportunity, and community
relations, while learning entrepreneurship in a fun and hands-on way.
We aspired to improve school spirit at Charlestown High School because
we are a school of limited resources that, in the past, did not have
a tradition of school spirit and events. We believe that school spirit
can inspire some students to stay in school and to aspire for excellence
in their studies. While learning about authentic business practices and
challenging ourselves to excel, we hope to create enthusiasm for our
school and enable more students to go to college. We have been proud
to offer scholarships to graduating seniors who show school spirit. We
also feel that C-town Spirit is our chance to create a sense of common
identity and loyalty in our school, which serves students from diverse
backgrounds and faraway neighborhoods. Ultimately, we will be a bridge
between our school and the neighborhood of Charlestown itself.
Entrepreneurship teaches us the value of ownership, helps us develop
business expertise, opens our minds to both corporate and social citizenry,
and allows us to demonstrate that it is up to strong individuals working
as a team to hold a business together. To operate C-town Spirit, we rely
on donations as well as funds generated by our C-town
Gear division.
Each year, revenue from the Foundation goes to sponsoring school spirit
events, scholarships, and select community causes and organizations.
